The clock is ticking, less than 24 hours left to sign up for the meet now. So far 15 lifters are in. Great to see so many new faces signed up. The number of women participating is at a record high! :)

Update to follow tomorrow after the meet sign-up deadline has passed.

The sign-up deadline has now passed. 18 lifters, an even balance of women and men (a historical first!!), representing Bulgaria, Canada (13 lifters!), Switzerland, The United Kingdom and The United States signed up. The final line-up can be seen here (http://virtualmeet.net/community/forum/meet-talk/275/msg1864/#msg1864).

The meet information with the upload instructions will be sent out after the uploading finishes for the Push-Pull meet (http://virtualmeet.net/community/forum/meet-talk/273/msg1803/#msg1803) in progress. This will keep me from having overlapping upload accounts open at the same time.

Meanwhile, the customary hunt for judges has begun. The line-up will be updated accordingly.

Thanks to everyone who signed up! You are all very much contributing to getting virtual weightlifting solidly airborne. :) And remember folks, feel free to use this thread for discussing anything in relation to the meet.

Have a great one everyone!

Good news everyone! Ron Dykstra (http://virtualmeet.net/ron/) (Canada) and Ron Villani (http://virtualmeet.net/ironman50/) (USA) graciously agreed to judge. Both of these gentlemen know their lifts, so you're all in good hands. They were also both judges in our inaugural weightlifting meet (http://virtualmeet.net/community/forum/meet-talk/249/msg1468/#msg1468) held in October 2008.

Thanks guys for again coming to the rescue. :)

One more judge to go and we're all set.

Lifters: you should now have received upload instructions via e-mail. If you haven't or have any questions whatsoever, please e-mail me at kristoffer@virtualmeet.net.

One week left... Good luck! :)

The judging panel is now fully manned thanks to Jamie Jamieson (http://virtualmeet.net/jamie/) (Canada) who agreed to judge.

Thanks Jamie! :)

Lisa, you can lift. There has been some talk about allowing the meet date to be changed closer to the meet and I think it is time we go ahead with that rule change. I posted a suggestion on the current rule thread (http://virtualmeet.net/community/forum/technical-questions/45/msg1896/#msg1896) for feedback.

Have a great meet! :)

Hi Kris,

I am also lifting with the rowers from Canada, and I was curious if it would be okay for me too to lift on Friday and not on the Sunday. This would be of great conveinence and it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Neysa

Virtualmeet.net is built around the concept of simulating a real meet to the extent possible. Real meets also have fixed meet dates and learning to peak on meet date is a big part of the game. Hence we have a deadline for how close to the meet the date can be changed. But in the interest of giving users a bit more room for conflicting schedule changes, I suggested earlier that the change date is moved closer to the meet. I allowed Lisa to change her lift date as the time for her request was quite in line with the suggested new deadline. There is more on the above mentioned rule thread (http://virtualmeet.net/community/forum/technical-questions/45/msg1896/#msg1896) about this and all feedback is welcome there. Basically, asking to change the meet date one day out is pushing it...  ;)

So in the end it is a question of whether this limitation is a good thing for the Virtualmeet.net concept or not. Personally, I think so. But in the end, this concept could look radically different, say being able to lift any time over the three days, perhaps also being able to take as many attempts as one wants and submit the three attempts one things are best.

So in short: under the current rules you are not allowed to change lift date this close to the meet.

I'm a couple hours late getting my last files on the server.  My computer power supply appears to be dying and my uploads failed last night and this morning.  I was able to get my lifts on a friends machine and am uploading them from there as I type.

Jeff, thanks for the update. I just reviewed your upload and everything seems to be in fine order. Thanks a lot for participating!

Lisa Harrington (http://virtualmeet.net/lisa1189/), who also lifted on Friday, also completed her upload earlier so the Friday lifters are done.

So far so good. :)

Most of the lifters are uploaded now. The meet should be with the judges Tuesday or Wednesday.

Hi Kris - thanks again, we had a fun meet.  Wish I'd done our OLY seminar before the meet!  This is my first time competing at these lifts, and as the judges will see, my technique can use some work.  Why the heck I couldn't drop under 200 is a mystery.
To judges: on our lifts, the weight listed in the filename is correct.  There's one lift by Luc where the cameraman (uh, me) says, "185lbs" but it's really 175lbs, as is obvious by the plates loaded on the bar (one red 45, two green 10s.)  Sorry for the confusion!
Chris

Thanks Chris! It's a delightful trend that so many people are bravely taking on the OLY lifts with little or no prior experience; there's definitively some bridges being built and the number of people who are sporting both the powerlifts and the OLY lifts on their home pages is increasing steadily. You weren't the only one in this meet who was a first timer. I will myself get under the bar for the next weightlifting meet in April... let's see who could use a clinic then.  ;)

Thanks for the update on the weights, will also mail this info to the judges to make sure they catch it.

Thanks again to the whole Catalyst crew for participating! :)

This was my first meet too. Things I learned:

1) Don't O lift in a flat above ground floor, your neighbours won't like it
2) Don't dump missed lifts on your thighs, it hurts
3) Don't get drunk 2 days before a meet, it's retarded

Had a great meet, inspiring to have so many lifters under various countries' flags. Also great to have so many chicks in this one.

I ran three - count 'em three - space heaters in my stone-cold winter shop for this one. Didn't dedicate to video wearing my husband's pants over my shorts to keep warm in between lifts!  ;)

Put Portland Oregon Weightlifting on the virtual meet map this time.  ;D

Haha, I was lifting in the cold as well, it was a couple degrees below freezing in the morning.  The first half of my warmup was getting the heater on the bar and warming it up so it wasn't so cold to hold on to.  Immediately after each lift I went and put on a long sleeve jacket and pants.  Hopefully by the next meet I'll have heat in the place.  (or it'll be warmer outside, maybe even both)

Ha ha! This'll help me enjoy your clips in a whole 'nother way  ;) Yup, I propped the bar across the bench and a chair in front of the heater to get it manageable.
Makes for good war stories, but I'm looking forward to those spring meets!  ;D

That must mean that at the university, we lift in luxury. We have heat and electric lights. We just keep running out of batteries and memory.

Can't wait for the PL meet in March. Some of the girls already started the new workout today in prep for that meet. I expect to see some good DL's and squats from the rowers.

Kat did you use your 2 x 4 parking brake to keep the bar from rolling across the floor. That's classic.

Bwahahaha! Indeed, fully braked.

University gyms ROCK! Great, we'll get a peek at a Canadian U gym!

Now just tell me how I can stop running out of memory and I'll be all set  ;)

As mentioned earlier, the Catalyst members had the luxury of attending an OLY seminar before the meet on Saturday. And the best of it all? Chris has shared the seminar with Nick Zossima on Vimeo (http://vimeo.com/3143089). Catalyst continues to impress!

Read more about it (http://www.catalystgym.com/2009/02/exploit-your-weaknesses.html) on the Catalyst blog (and see some inspiring unedited content from the Push-Pull!)

Update: the meet has now been passed to the judges. As usual, they have one week to finish the judging, i.e. Wednesday, February 18th.

The judging progress can be followed in real time in the "6-8 WEIGHTLIFTING MEET JUDGING PROGRESS" box above the forum.

Stay tuned!

The judging has been finished. I'll try to get the meet out tomorrow Thursday or Friday.

Many thanks to the judges! :)

The meet has been released! (http://virtualmeet.net/meets/200902wl/) As usual the rankings (http://virtualmeet.net/rankings/), stats etc. have also been updated. A big big thanks to the judges and all who participated. Another meet with solid lifting, check it out!

This was also a historic meet being the first meet with more women than men (8 to 7), mainly thanks to the strong representation by the UOIT rowing team. It's great to see the number of female lifters on the increase. :)

Err... you got my age wrong - I'm still 26.

Title: Re: DISCUSSION: Weightlifting, 6-8 February 2009
Post by: kris on February 21, 2009, 06:31:59 am
Err... you got my age wrong - I'm still 26.

We follow the praxis in weightlifting and powerlifting to determine competition age based on calendar year. For example, the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) rules define the Master I age division as follows:

Quote
MASTER I: From January 1 in the calendar year he reaches 40 through the full calendar year in which he reaches 49.

In other words, if you turn 27 sometime in 2009 your competition age will be 27 for the whole year. The age coefficients used in the relative strength formulas are thus also based on calendar years.

Now, it's no small wonder if you are not aware of this even after reading the rules (http://virtualmeet.net/meets/rules/), because this crucial piece of information seems to be missing. It is explained in the instructions for how to use the Rankings calculator (http://virtualmeet.net/rankings/calculator/), but obviously it should also be in the rules and elsewhere where age is mentioned. I will update the rules with this information some time next week. Thanks a lot for bringing this oversight to my attention. :)

That's fascinating! I learned something this morning already.

Thanks judges and Kris. Thank you lifters for a great meet. The filming seemed especially clean to me, so it was easy to watch everyone's lifts.

Thanks again, Kris.  Great job, as always.  We may have a few members do the April PL meet, but I regret that I won't be one of them this time.
